Course 3 - 3.6 Academic Writing

In this lecture we will highlight both the opportunities but also dangers of using AI to assist with academic writing

This lecture is from the course Generative AI for Writers.

While its possible to use AI to help with academic writing, great care should be taken with when and how it is used.

Studying is your chance to gain essential life skills. If you don't seize this opportunity to develop these skills early on and use AI as a substitute, you may not have the chance to do so later on. You risk becoming reliant on AI tools to do your thinking for you, rather than using them to support your own thinking and skill development.

When you find yourself stuck in the brainstorming phase of writing an academic essay or struggling with the direction of your argument for example, generative AI can be a useful tool to help you overcome these hurdles without doing all the work for you. Using AI in this way, to support your academic writing rather than replace it, is a smart approach that I strongly recommend.
