Interview: Cyrus Johnson; AI's Disruption of Law, Democratising Legal Knowledge

In this interview, Cyrus Johnson, a corporate attorney, looks into the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the legal industry.

As an "organic convert" to AI, Cyrus shares his journey of recognising the technology's potential to solve longstanding challenges faced by clients, from the lack of transparency in the traditional legal model to the increasing virtualisation of legal services post-pandemic.

Cyrus passionately champions the opportunities AI presents for empowering clients and reshaping the legal landscape. He envisions a future where clients can access and understand the law more effectively, challenging lawyers to elevate their game and provide more personalised, value-added services.

His work on "law bots," interactive AI-powered tools that can educate and assist clients, exemplifies his innovative approach to bridging the gap between legal expertise and client understanding.

The interview also explores the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI, highlighting significant court cases that are shaping the boundaries of fair use and intellectual property rights in the face of AI-driven content generation.

Cyrus offers insights into the challenges faced by legal professionals who must adapt to this technological disruption, underscoring the importance of embracing change and finding new ways to serve clients effectively in the digital age.

From there he went on to work on large technology deals (BPO, Licensing, SAAS, Swt services) for a leading Fortune 500 investment firm.

Most recently he has worked also in asset management, parallel legal, acting as managing director for leading private family office operations with holdings in real estate, media, technology, and alternative energy.

Calling himself an “organic Ai convert,” Cyrus sees the “seeds” of Ai progression in the law laid by well known shortcomings of the profession, brought to a tipping point by the Pandemic era.

In addition to helping corporate clients streamline their legal portfolios, Cyrus works in legal design and legal Ai product development.
